What is GST (Goods and Services Tax)?

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) is an indirect tax levied on the supply of goods and services in India. It replaced multiple cascading taxes like VAT, Service Tax, and Excise Duty to create a unified single taxation system.

GST is categorized into three main types depending on the nature of transaction:

  • CGST (Central Goods and Services Tax): Collected by the Central Government on intrastate (within the state) sales.
  • SGST (State Goods and Services Tax): Collected by the State Government on intrastate sales.
  • IGST (Integrated Goods and Services Tax): Collected by the Central Government on interstate (outside the state) transactions.

GST Calculation Formulas

GST Exclusive (Add GST)

Calculates total cost when starting from the base taxable price.

GST Amount = (Base Price * GST Rate) / 100
Total Price = Base Price + GST Amount

GST Inclusive (Remove / Reverse GST)

Extracts the base taxable price when starting from the final total price.

Base Price = Total Price / (1 + (GST Rate / 100))
GST Amount = Total Price - Base Price

Pro Tips & Statutory Advice

Practical business & compliance advice

  • Reverse GST Calculation Formula To extract pre-tax base value from an MRP: Taxable Value = MRP / (1 + (Rate / 100)). The tax component is simply MRP minus Taxable Value.
  • Special Slabs (3% & 0.25%) Gold, silver, and precious jewellery attract 3% GST, while rough diamonds and gemstones are taxed at 0.25% (or 1.5% for cut/polished stones).
  • Equal Split of CGST and SGST On all local sales within your state, GST is always divided 50:50 between the Central Government (CGST) and State Government (SGST).
  • Rule 50 Rupee Rounding Under CGST Rule 50, all final tax and invoice amounts must be rounded off to the nearest whole rupee (50 paise and above rounded up).
